The working hypothesis: gravity is not fundamental — it may be emergent, and electromagnetism may sit closer to the root of reality than the textbooks allow. This ledger takes every serious lead we've gathered — from fringe lecture halls to Gravity Probe B — and asks one question of each: what does the actual evidence say?

Live bet: the evidence leaves the question genuinely open, with honest odds. Reframed: the intuition was pointing at something real, but the right question turned out different from the asked one. Closed — explained: the effect is real, the mechanism is mundane (these usually contain the best surprises). Closed — refuted: tested and failed. Shelf: not a claim at all — a document whose myth outgrew its contents.

Every card opens into its evidence: the best case for, the decisive case against, what real science survives inside, and sources. Optimism lives in the ordering — bets before burials — and honesty lives in the receipts.

01 · Your intuition, on the record

The gut said: gravity is EM's attractive side.
Here's what held up.

Three findings, in decreasing order of comfort — and the third one is the door left open.

First: gravity really does behave like magnetism — measured, not speculated. When mass moves, it creates a second gravitational field shaped exactly like a magnetic field around a current. This is frame dragging, and the weak-field equations of general relativity can be written in near-perfect Maxwell form (physicists call it GEM — gravitoelectromagnetism). Gravity Probe B flew gyroscopes around Earth and measured the drag at −37.2 ± 7.2 milliarcseconds/year against a predicted −39.2. Satellite laser ranging confirmed it to a few percent. The instinct that these two forces rhyme is not fringe — it's confirmed physics.

Second: gravity cannot literally be electromagnetism. The disqualifier is simple enough to say at dinner: EM has two kinds of charge, so it can push and pull; gravity has one, and only pulls. There is no negative mass. The forces also differ in kind (spin-2 vs spin-1, in the jargon), and by that famous factor of 10³⁶ in strength. The rhyme is structural, not an identity — and it dissolves entirely in strong fields.

Third — the open door: both may be children of one parent. The respectable version of your question is unification, not reduction. Kaluza–Klein theory (1921) derived electromagnetism from five-dimensional gravity — beautiful, wrong in its particle predictions, never fully dead as an idea. String theory makes the photon and the graviton different vibrations of the same object. Nobody has closed this door. It's where your intuition, stated carefully, still lives.

This is a living document. Three ways it moves:

Bets move when evidence moves. Emergent gravity has active observational tests; the bench experiments are one weekend from results. Verdicts here are timestamps, not tombstones.
